Glasgow Caledonian University, sometimes known as GCU, Caledonian, or Caley, is a Scottish public university located in Glasgow. The Queen’s College, Glasgow (founded in 1875) and Glasgow Polytechnic merged in 1993 to form Glasgow Polytechnic (founded in 1991).
The university’s New York partner institution, which was founded in 2013, was granted permission to offer degrees in the state in June 2017, making it the first international university-founded higher education institution to do so.
The Queen’s College, Glasgow (founded 1875) and the Glasgow College of Technology are the University’s forerunners (founded 1971). During its centennial celebrations in 1975, the Queen’s College, which specialised in giving training in domestic science, earned the Royal honour of being named after Queen Elizabeth.
Since 1944, Queen Elizabeth has served as Patron of the College. One of Scotland’s largest central universities, Glasgow Polytechnic, offered externally accredited degrees and certificates in engineering, science, and the humanities, the first of which was a BA in Optics, followed by degrees in Social Sciences (1973) and Nursing (1974). The two institutions merged on April 1, 1993, to establish Glasgow Caledonian University. Caledonia, the poetic Latin term for modern-day Scotland, was chosen as the name for the new university. The university’s main campus is located on the site of the former Caledonian Railway’s Buchanan Street Station.
According to independent research conducted in 2015, the University contributes over £480 million to Scotland’s economy each year, with the quantifiable lifetime premium of a one-year class of graduates estimated to be around £400 million, bringing the University’s total annual economic impact in Scotland to around £880 million.
At a ceremony in July 2018, Annie Lennox was installed as GCU’s first female chancellor, succeeding Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. Pamela Gillies was appointed as the University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor in 2006.

- Only applicants on a Full Time Taught Postgraduate Masters course are eligible to apply.

- As part of the application, you will be required to submit a video of no longer than 2 minutes telling the University about yourself and how you have contributed to the common good.
