King’s College London (abbreviated as KCL) is an English public research university based in London. Under the patronage of King George IV and the Duke of Wellington, KCL was founded by royal charter in 1829. In 1836, KCL became one of the University of London’s two founding colleges.

It is one among England’s oldest university-level institutions. In the late twentieth century, KCL grew by merging with Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea College of Science and Technology (in 1985), the Institute of Psychiatry (in 1997), the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, and the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery (in 1998). KCL is consistently named among the world’s top and most respected universities.

The ancient Strand Campus in downtown London, three other Thames-side campuses nearby, and one in Denmark Hill in south London make up KCL five campuses. It also has a presence in Shrivenham, where it offers professional military training, and in Newquay, Cornwall, where it operates an information service centre.

King's College London (KCL)

KCL had a total revenue of £1 billion in 2020/21, with £188.0 million coming from research grants and contracts. It has the fourth largest endowment in the United Kingdom, and the largest in London. By overall enrolment, it is the United Kingdom’s 12th largest university.

Its academic activities are separated into nine faculties, each of which has its own set of departments, centres, and research divisions. The Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, and the Russell Group are among the academic organisations that KCL belongs to.

Six Medical Research Council centres are located at KCL, and the university is a founding member of the KCL Health Partners academic health sciences centre, the Francis Crick Institute, and MedCity. It has the world’s first nursing school, the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, and is the largest European institution for graduate and post-graduate medical instruction and biomedical research in terms of student numbers.

KCL is part of the “golden triangle” of institutions that are located in the cities of Oxford, Cambridge, and London. By virtue of its founding, KCL has royal sponsorship. Queen Elizabeth II is the current patron.

14 Nobel laureates, as well as contributors to the discovery of DNA structure, Hepatitis C, the Hepatitis D genome, and the Higgs boson; pioneers of in-vitro fertilisation, stem cell/mammalian cloning, and the modern hospice movement; and key researchers who advanced radar, radio, television, and mobile phones, are among KCL alumni and staff.
