    About Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU)

Dr. Peter Sammartino and his wife Sally founded Fairleigh Dickinson University as a junior college in 1942, and it was named after an early patron Colonel Fairleigh S. Dickinson, co-founder of Becton Dickinson. Its first campus was in Rutherford, New Jersey.

When the GI Bill and veterans money led Fairleigh Dickinson Junior College to predesignate itself as Fairleigh Dickinson College in 1948, it enlarged its curriculum to include a four-year programme.

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools granted the school accreditation the following year. The New Jersey State Board of Education designated the institution as Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1956.

The historic Twombly-Vanderbilt estate in Madison and Florham Park, New Jersey, was acquired by the university in 1958 to serve as its third campus. The National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities is a member of Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The landscaping for the Twombly-Vanderbilt estate was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the same landscape architect who designed Central Park (now the Florham Campus). The main house of the Twombly-Vanderbilt estate, now Hennessy Hall, was created in the Georgian Revival style by the architectural company McKim, Mead, and White.

The residence was completed in 1897 and was inspired by Sir Christopher Wren’s design for the wing of Hampton Court Palace. Emma Joy Dana, university librarian Dr. James Fraser, and a group of friends and colleagues founded the Friends of Florham in 1990 with the purpose of advising and assisting the administration and board of trustees in the care, maintenance, and preservation of the Twombly Estate, known as “Florham.”
