In Leicester, England, there is a public research university known as the University of Leicester. The main campus is next to Victoria Park and located south of the city centre. University College, Leicester, the institution that preceded this one, attained university standing in 1957.
In 2019–20, the university earned £323.1 million, of which £57 million came from research grants.
The university is renowned for developing genetic fingerprinting as well as for finding and identifying King Richard III’s remains.
The Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society was responsible for the city of Leicester’s first significant university proposals. After the founding of the University of Birmingham in 1900, followed by Nottingham University Institution, and the success of Owen’s College in Manchester, it was believed that Leicester should also have a university college.
University colleges required to be affiliated with universities that had the authority to grant degrees throughout the period from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th. The majority of college students took exams that were designed by the University of London.
The Reverend James Went, headmaster of the Wyggeston Boys’ School, and J. D. Paul, who served as co-presidents of the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society, advocated for the establishment of a university college on a regular basis in the late 19th century. The School of Art and the Technical School were being funded by the Corporation of Leicester, but no private donations were flowing.
Dr. Astley V. Clarke brought up the subject once more in 1912. He was born in Leicester in 1870, and before attending Guy’s Hospital for his medical studies, he attended Wyggeston Grammar School and the University of Cambridge. He took over as the society’s new president for literature and philosophy.
The response was conflicting, with some claiming that Leicester’s modest population would translate into a lack of demand. The idea of a university college was dropped in 1914 with the start of the First World War.
In a 1917 editorial, the Leicester Daily Post argued that something other than memorials should be built to honour the fallen soldiers. Both The Post and its rival, The Leicester Mail, urged donations to establish the university college when the war was over. A federal university college of the East Midlands was proposed to include Leicester in addition to Nottingham, Sutton Bonington, and Loughborough, but nothing of this sort ever materialised.
