International students interested in pursuing a master’s degree in architecture can apply for Neufert-Foundation Scholarships. The Neufert-Foundation awards scholarships to students pursuing a Master’s degree in architecture, landscaping, or urban development after completing their Bachelor’s degree.

The Neufert-Foundation is dedicated to preserving Prof. Ernst Neufert’s cultural and architectural legacy. The Bauentwurfslehre was written by Ernst Neufert, a Bauhaus student who travelled extensively to gain experiences and learn more about architecture. Ernst Neufert’s wide and internationally famous work was shaped by his studies abroad. As a result, the foundation wants to assist young architects in gathering their own international experiences.

Freyburg a der Unstrut was the birthplace of Ernst Neufert. Neufert began studying construction at the Bauwerbeschule in Weimar at the age of 17, following five years of working as a bricklayer. In 1919, his teacher suggested him as one of Walter Gropius’s initial Bauhaus students.

In 1920, he completed his studies and started on a year-long study tour in Spain with expressionist architect Paul Linder (1897-1968), sketching mediaeval churches. He met Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona, and the young student was deeply influenced by his architecture. Neufert went on to be one of Gaudi’s early German supporters. He returned to the Bauhaus in 1921, becoming chief architect under Gropius at one of the Weimar Republic’s most important architecture studios.

He married Alice Spies-Neufert, a painter who was a student of Bauhaus masters Georg Muche and Paul Klee, in 1924, after meeting her in 1923. They were the parents of four kids (Peter, Christa, Ingrid and Ilas).

In 1925, Neufert worked closely with Gropius on the completion of the masters’ houses for Muche, Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky, as well as the implementation of the new Bauhaus buildings in Dessau. He returned to Weimar in 1926 to teach at the Bauhochschule (Building College), also known as “the other Bauhaus,” under Otto Bartning.

He built the Mensa am Philosophenweg and the Abbeanum in Jena between 1928 and 1930. In the town of Gelmeroda, near Weimar, he erected his private home in 1929. (today the home of the Neufert Foundation and Neufert Box, a small museum with changing exhibitions). Following the Nazis’ closure of the Bauhochschule, he relocated to Berlin and worked at Johannes Itten’s private art and architecture school, which was also forced to close in 1934.

Neufert-Foundation recognised the potential for rationalisation of building processes early on, as well as the requirement for normative principles.

Neufert was appointed professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt after WWII. In 1953, he and his son Peter founded Neufert und Neufert and completed a number of projects, including a number of industrial structures. At 1986, he died in his Bugneaux-sur-Rolle home.
