More About Robert Gordon University (RGU)

Public Robert Gordon University, sometimes known as RGU, is located in Aberdeen, Scotland. It was founded in the 18th century by Robert Gordon, a wealthy merchant from Aberdeen, and evolved from a number of institutions that offered technical and adult education in the 19th and early 20th centuries until becoming a RGU university in 1992.

One of the city’s two universities is this one (the other is the University of Aberdeen). RGU is a campus-based university, and in Aberdeen, it has just one campus, located in Garthdee to the southwest of the city.

The RGU institution confers degrees in several academic fields, ranging from BA/BSc to PhD, with a focus on professional, technical, health, and creative fields that are most relevant to business and industry. There are also a variety of conventional academic degree programmes available, such as those in the social sciences. The academic and research personnel of the institution also conducts research in a variety of fields.

The RGU evolved from the various educational institutions that grew up in Aberdeen to offer adults technical, vocational, and artistic training, mostly in the evenings and part-time. Robert Gordon’s Hospital was founded in the middle of the 18th century to provide the poor with a basic education and a reasonable start in life.

After numerous mergers between these institutions, it changed its name to Robert Gordon’s Technical College in 1910. Later, as a result of new developments, it changed its name to Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology in 1965, at which point it started to conduct more research and offer degree-level education (by now mostly offering day classes to full-time students).

In 1992, it finally became into a university. It has never been a polytechnic, in contrast to numerous contemporary universities in the UK that were established after government changes in 1992.
