More About Seattle University

Seattle University (SU) stands as a prominent Jesuit private university nestled in the vibrant city of Seattle, Washington. With an extensive enrollment of over 7,500 students participating in diverse undergraduate and graduate programs spread across eight schools, SU proudly holds the distinction of being the largest independent university in the Northwestern United States.

The university’s journey traces back to 1891 when Adrian Sweere, S.J., assumed leadership of a modest parish near downtown Seattle. Initially named after the nearby Immaculate Conception parish, the institution underwent transformations, ultimately becoming Seattle College in 1898. In 1909, Seattle College awarded its first bachelor’s degrees, marking a significant step in its evolution. Initially serving as both a high school and college, the institution shifted locations over the years, settling permanently on First Hill in 1931.

Despite societal challenges, Seattle College boldly established a “night school” for women in 1931, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity. The transformative era under Father Albert A. Lemieux, S.J., saw the institution renamed as Seattle University in 1948. The journey continued with the establishment of the Seattle University School of Law in 1993, later relocating to the Seattle campus in 1999.

In 2009, Seattle University successfully completed its most substantial capital campaign, raising nearly $169 million. This achievement paved the way for significant developments, including contributions to the scholarship fund, academic programs, professorships, a fitness complex, an arts center, and the impressive $56 million Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons, enriching the SU campus since its opening in the fall of 2010.
