    Adrian Sweere, S.J., assumed leadership of a small parish near downtown Seattle at Broadway and Madison in 1891. Initially, the school was named after the nearby Immaculate Conception parish and did not provide higher education. In 1898, the school was renamed Seattle College after both the city and Chief Seattle, and 11 years later, it awarded its first bachelor’s degrees. Initially, the school served as a high school as well as a college. From 1919 to 1931, the college was located on Interlaken Boulevard, but in 1931, it relocated permanently to First Hill. Seattle College established a “night school” for women in 1931, despite the fact that admitting women was highly controversial at the time.

    Under the direction of Father Albert A. Lemieux, S.J., Seattle College was renamed Seattle University in 1948. The Seattle University School of Law was founded in 1993 with the purchase of the Law School from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, and it relocated to the Seattle campus in 1999.

    Seattle University completed its largest capital campaign in 2009, raising nearly $169 million.
