Swansea University is a public research university located in Swansea, Wales, in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1920 as University College of Swansea, the fourth college of the University of Wales. In 1996, the University of Wales underwent institutional modifications that resulted in the name change to University of Wales Swansea.

The name Swansea University was formally adopted on September 1, 2007, when the University of Wales transitioned to a non-membership con federal organisation and the former members became universities in their own right.
