In Jena, Thuringia, Germany, there is a public research institution known as the University of Jena, or officially the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

One of the ten oldest institutions in Germany, the university was founded in 1558. It has ties to six Nobel Prize winners, most recently Herbert Kroemer, a Jena graduate, who earned the Nobel Prize for physics in 2000. When Jena attracted some of the most important minds at the turn of the 19th century, Friedrich Schiller, a poet and philosopher, was teaching there and had the city renamed in his honour.

The institution was at the epicentre of the development of German idealism and early Romanticism, with Karl Leonhard Reinhold, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, G. W. F. Hegel, F. W. J. Schelling, and Friedrich Schlegel among its faculty.

The institution had 375 professors and about 19,000 students enrolled as of 2014. Walter Rosenthal, the current president, was chosen to serve a six-year term in 2014.

The university was pushed in the 20th century by collaboration with the Carl Zeiss (business), allowing it to grow its student body and become a mass university. There were 112 university lecturers and 1,100 students enrolled in the institution in 1905, an almost 20-fold increase. The sole comprehensive university in Thuringia is Friedrich-Schiller University.
