    On January 1, 2012, Henri Poincaré University, Nancy 2 University, Paul Verlaine University – Metz, and the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine merged to form the University of Lorraine, commonly abbreviated as UL (INPL). The main colleges in the Lorraine area were intended to be unified. With the establishment of a “Pôle de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur,” the merging process began in 2009.
