    More About Giorgio Cini Foundation

The Giorgio Cini Foundation, sometimes known as the Cini Foundation, was established on April 20, 1951, in honour of the Italian businessman Giorgio Cini, who passed away in August 1949.

On the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, the Foundation is housed in the historic San Giorgio Monastery. In honour of his son Giorgio Cini, who perished in a 1949 aviation accident close to Cannes, Vittorio Cini founded the organisation.

Since joining the Italian Fascist party in 1926, Vittorio Cini has held significant roles in business and government throughout the decades Benito Mussolini ruled Italy. He was appointed to the Ministry of Communication in the beginning of 1943, but resigned shortly after, openly criticising the clear catastrophic status of the country.

He participated in the anti-Mussolini plan, and when the Nazis occupied Northern Italy, the SS detained him and transported him to the Dachau concentration camp. His son Giorgio was able to secure his freedom by buying off officials with diamonds and jewels after being admitted to the hospital.

Additionally, Giorgio would successfully advocate against the older Cini’s legal ban from political activity, claiming that his ultimate split with Mussolini lessened the impact of his many years of cooperation.
