The organisation began as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand in 1883. It was first located in an abandoned courthouse. With around 40,000 students enrolled across five campuses in Auckland, the Institution of Auckland is now New Zealand’s largest university by enrollment.
The majority of the students and faculty are located at the City Campus in the heart of Auckland. Eight faculties, including a law school, and three affiliated research institutions are present.
On May 23, 1883, as Auckland University Institution, the University of Auckland was established as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. During the university’s formative years, John Chapman Andrew was in charge of its stewardship (Vice Chancellor of the University of New Zealand 1885–1903).
It began with 95 students and 4 faculty members, including William Steadman Aldis, professor of mathematics, Algernon Phillips Withheld Thomas, professor of natural sciences, and Frederick Douglas Brown, professor of chemistry (all from London and Oxford). It was housed in a former courthouse and jail (Cambridge).
The number of students had increased to 156 by 1901; the bulk of these part-time enrolls were studying to become teachers or legal clerks. An rising number of students began enrolling in business courses starting in 1905.

- The applicants must be domestic or domestic-fee paying international PhD students.
- The applicants must have a GPA/GPE of at least 7.00 in that programme to be eligible for scholarship consideration.
