In Pembroke, North Carolina, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a public university. UNC Pembroke is a master’s degree-granting university affiliated with the University of North Carolina. Its history is inextricably linked to that of the Lumbee people.
The university’s campus is located just behind N.C. Highway 711, just north of Pembroke. Interstates 74 and 95 are both just minutes away from campus. The Chavis University Center is considered the heart of campus. Students can bowl, play pool, and other similar games, or simply relax in the lounge. The UC houses the dining hall and Chick-fil-A.
Students use the UC lawn, an open grass space in front of the UC, for amateur sports, reading on benches, and free expression. Faculty Row, a major road for university traffic, separates the campus into two sections: east and west. The Business Administration Building, Education Center, and most of the residence hall communities, such as Oak Hall, Pine Hall, North, and Belk, are located on the west side of campus. The north end of campus is dominated by Lumbee Hall, the Dial Humanities building, the Sampson building, the Auxiliary building, the Jones Athletic Center, and the Givens Performing Arts Center.
Givens Performing Arts Hub, a regional centre for culture, arts, and entertainment, is located on campus. GPAC hosts a variety of Broadway shows, orchestras, and family shows, as well as the “Distinguished Speaker Series,” which has featured notable speakers such as Cory Booker, Bill Nye, Jodi Sweetin, Patch Adams, Gabby Douglas, and Hill Harper, among others, in collaboration with the Association of Campus Entertainment.
