Interesting Facts About The College of Wooster
In Wooster, Ohio, there is a private liberal arts institution called the College of Wooster. The University of Wooster, which was established in 1866 by the Presbyterian Church, has been formally non-sectarian since 1969, when ownership connections with the Presbyterian Church were severed.
The college has been a co-ed school since its founding. It has roughly 2,000 students enrolled and belongs to the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, the Great Lakes Colleges Association, and the Five Colleges of Ohio.
In addition, the College of Wooster offers an independent study program whereby every student works one-on-one with a faculty adviser to finish a written thesis or other important project during the course of their senior year. These projects are typically between 50 and 100 pages long.
Additionally, the student defends their thesis in front of a faculty panel orally. Other schools and universities have taken notice of the curriculum, which Howard Lowry started in 1947, and several other institutions have based their own programs on it.
Because writing the thesis may take a lot of time, one student who was writing in the student newspaper The Wooster Voice proposed that the independent study program be integrated with graduate school applications and career preparation.
The College of Wooster has a residential campus with 30 program houses, 16 residence halls, and spaces for 16 to 270 students apiece. Ninety-nine percent of the student body resides in on-campus residence halls.
Along with Andrews Hall, Armington Hall, Babcock Hall, Bissman Hall, Bornhuetter Hall, Brush Hall, Compton Hall, Douglass Hall, Gault Manor, Gault Schoolhouse, Holden Hall, Kenarden Lodge, Luce Hall, Stevenson Hall, and Wagner Hall, there are a number of other residence halls on campus.
