This scholarship was established in 2008 to honor the memory of John Thompson, one of Ireland’s top newspaper executives. John was crucial in the founding and commercial development of several of Ireland’s most successful and enduring magazines, including U Magazine, The Sunday World, and The Irish Farmers Journal, throughout his nearly 30-year career in the industry.

Thompson spent two years at Grand Rapids Junior College before being accepted on a full scholarship to Kenyon College to study under John Crowe Ransom. He shared a home with Robert Lowell, Peter Taylor (writer), Robie Macauley, and Randall Jarrell at Douglass House, the writer’s home. 240, Saunders. In 1940, he received his magna cum laude degree. He was admitted to Columbia University for graduate studies, but he had to wait until 1941 to serve in the military.

Thompson earned his Ph.D. in 1957 at Columbia University, where he studied poetry and literature under Lionel Trilling’s tutelage. During his graduate studies, he worked as an English instructor at Bard College (1946–1947), Sarah Lawrence College (1947–1949), and Columbia University (1949–1956). In 1961, Columbia University Press (New York), Routledge, and Kegan Paul published their dissertation, The Founding of English Metre, which examined the origins of poetry metre in London. Columbia reissued it in 1966 with a foreword by John Hollander.

Thompson began publishing scholarly pieces in Partisan Review and Hudson Review as early as 1952, bringing him to the notice of the New York literary community. (p. 241 in Saunders). Thompson was hired as the Executive Director of the Fairfield Foundation, a CIA-funded organisation that provided small grants to third-world writers and thinkers. From 1956 through 1965, he worked there, frequently travelling to Africa (Saunders p. 137-138). During this time and throughout his life, he continued to publish literary criticism, essays, and stories in a variety of journals, including Poetry Magazine, The Kenyon Review, The New York Review of Books, Commentary, Harper’s, The New York Times Book Review, Parnassus, Shenandoah (magazine), and The American Scholar (magazine).

Thompson was hired as a full professor of English Literature at Stony Brook University in 1965 after leaving Farfield. He left the company in 1983.
