A group of CDU politicians, including Bundestag president Hermann Ehlers, Robert Tillmanns, and Heinrich Krone, began considering the formation of a “structured civic-education programme inspired by Christian democratic ideas” in 1952. The Society for Christian Democratic Education was founded in Bonn on December 20, 1955, and was renamed after Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on October 13, 1964.

According to the foundation’s official website, the goal of its civic education programmes is to “promote freedom and liberty, peace, and justice” by “furthering European union, enhancing transatlantic relations, and deepening development cooperation.” Through research and analyses of contemporary political trends, its role as a think tank and consulting organisation is to equip citizens with a foundation for political action.
