The Konrad Adenauer Foundation (German: Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, KAS) is a German political party foundation that is affiliated with but separate from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Sankt Augustin near Bonn, as well as Berlin, are the foundation’s headquarters. The KAS has 78 offices worldwide and operates programmes in more than 100 countries. Norbert Lammert, the former President of the German Bundestag, is the organization’s current chairman. It is a member of the European People’s Party’s official foundation and think tank, the Centre for European Studies (EPP).

A group of CDU politicians, including Bundestag president Hermann Ehlers, Robert Tillmanns, and Heinrich Krone, began considering the formation of a “structured civic-education programme inspired by Christian democratic ideas” in 1952. The Society for Christian Democratic Education was founded in Bonn on December 20, 1955, and was renamed after Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on October 13, 1964.

According to the foundation’s official website, the goal of its civic education programmes is to “promote freedom and liberty, peace, and justice” by “furthering European union, enhancing transatlantic relations, and deepening development cooperation.” Through research and analyses of contemporary political trends, its role as a think tank and consulting organisation is to equip citizens with a foundation for political action. Each year, the KAS hosts over 2,500 conferences and events around the world, and it actively promotes intellectually gifted youth’s political participation and education through a prestigious scholarship programme and an ongoing comprehensive seminar programme.
