The American University in Cairo is an Egyptian private research university. The university provides undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in an American-style, as well as a continuing education program.

Over 50 countries are represented among the AUC student body. Academics, business professionals, diplomats, journalists, writers, and others from the United States, Egypt, and other countries make up AUC’s faculty, adjunct teaching staff, and visiting lecturers.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and Egypt’s National Authority for Quality Assurance and Assessment of Education have both accredited AUC.

The American University in Cairo was founded in 1919 as an English-language university and preparatory school by the American Mission in Egypt, a Protestant mission sponsored by the United Presbyterian Church of North America. Charles A. Watson, the university’s founder, wished to establish a western institution of higher learning.

AUC was designed to function as both a preparatory school and a university. On October 5, 1920, the preparatory school opened its doors to 142 students in the Khairy Pasha palace, which was built in the 1860. In 1923, 20 students received junior college-level certificates as their first diplomas.

There were disagreements between Watson, who wanted to improve the university’s academic reputation, and United Presbyterian leaders in the United States, who wanted to return the university to its Christian roots. Four years later, Watson determined that the university could not afford to maintain its original religious ties and that the promotion of good moral and ethical behavior was the university’s best hope.

The university, which had previously only accepted male students, admitted its first female student in 1928. That same year, the university graduated its first class, awarding two Bachelor of Arts degrees and one Bachelor of Sciences degree.

AUC added its first graduate programs to its existing Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Sciences, Graduate Diploma, and Continuing Education programs in 1950, and phased out the preparatory school programme in 1951. During the Six-Day War, AUC avoided being nationalized, despite the fact that the majority of American faculty were forced to leave the country. By the mid-1970, the university had a diverse range of liberal arts and science programs.

In the years since, the university has expanded its engineering, management, computer science, journalism and mass communication, and sciences programs, as well as established a number of research centers in strategic areas such as business, the social sciences, philanthropy and civic engagement, and science and technology. In the 1950, the university also changed its name from The American University at Cairo to The American University in Cairo, replacing “at” with “in.”
