More About Norwich University of the Arts (NUA)
Norwich University of the Arts is a public university specialising in art, design, and media in Norwich, Norfolk, United Kingdom. Norwich School of Design was founded in 1845 and has a long history of arts education. In 2013, it was granted full university status.
NUA is the smaller of Norwich’s two universities, the University of East Anglia being the larger.
The Norwich School of Design, which was found to produce designers for local industry, is the university’s history. It was founded by painters and followers of the ‘Norwich School of Painters,’ which was the only provincial British school to achieve international recognition for landscape painting.
In 1994, NIAD was renamed Norwich School of Art & Design and relaunched with a new corporate brand as a Higher Education Institution (HEI).
The School was renamed Norwich University College of the Arts in November 2007 after receiving the authority to issue its own degrees up to Master’s level.
The number of students required for university status was reduced from 4000 to 1000 in 2012, making the college eligible for university status. In 2013, the university status was acknowledged, and the name was changed to Norwich University of the Arts, with John Hurt as the first chancellor.
