Interesting Facts About The Harvard University

Harvard University is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based private Ivy League research university. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States and one of the most famous in the world, having been founded in 1636 as Harvard College and named for its first benefactor, the Puritan preacher John Harvard.

Harvard University founding was authorized by the Massachusetts colonial legislature, which was “afraid of leaving an illiterate ministry to the churches, when our present ministers shall lie in the dust”, though never formally affiliated with any denomination, Harvard University primarily trained Congregational clergy in its early years. During the 18th century, its curriculum and student population were steadily secularized, and by the 19th century, it had established itself as the dominant cultural establishment among Boston’s elite.

President Charles William Eliot’s long term (1869–1909) developed the college and its professional schools into a contemporary research university following the American Civil War; Harvard was a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900. James B. Conant was the university’s president during the Great Depression and World War II, and after the war, he liberalized admissions.

The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study is part of the university’s ten academic faculties. Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate study in a wide range of academic fields, whereas the other schools only offer graduate degrees, most of which are professional. The 209-acre (85 ha) Cambridge campus centered on Harvard Yard, an adjacent campus immediately over the Charles River in Boston’s Alston neighborhood, and the medical campus in Boston Longwood Medical Area are the three primary campuses of Harvard.

Regarding transcripts from foreign universities: our reviewers read many applications from those at foreign universities and request as much transcript-like official documentation as the Registrar at your university can provide, for all graduate work—both for the Master’s and PhD programs in which you have been or are currently enrolled. Your institution most likely gets these requests often and can provide the required paperwork to you upon request.
